A Pathway
to Regional
Resilience
A paper about physical hubs designed to catalyze social, ecological, and economic transformation in the regions around them, generating value across scales.
About this work
This paper is the first in a two-part series born from a collaborative initiative to advance place-based regeneration around the world.
We stand rooted in a shared belief: meaningful climate adaptation and economic transformation must be driven by locally grounded action. Bioregions offer a uniquely effective frame for this transition and whether as practitioners, funders, researchers, land stewards, or system conveners, many of you are already playing key roles in this ecosystem.
Our first paper is focused on mapping Biohubs — referring to projects with physical infrastructure such as farms, campuses, or community centers, who are playing critical roles to reshape our landscapes and future. After reducing our research scope from thousands of incredible land based projects to 150+ Biohub initiatives worldwide, we found not only demonstrative proof points of a Biohub's efficacy, yet a depth of wisdom cultivated with care poised to shift practice, funding and activation on a global scale.
Whether you are new to this work or have been doing it for decades, we share these resources in an effort to support the long-term vibrancy of regional efforts. We have three simple goals: build shared knowledge to faster impact; pool shared resources to lower the cost of operations; and—perhaps most important of all—aid in increasing the awareness and capital flowing into this field to grow regional resiliency worldwide.
While this is only the beginning for us, our first paper would not have been possible without the incredible leaders and Biohub projects across the globe who graciously contributed their time, care and knowledge. Each who are actively changing their bioregions through the dedicated effort of planting each seed, each mineral, each microbe, each mind one at a time. All of these contributions stand on the shoulders of the extraordinary efforts and wisdom cultivated over decades, most of which was born from indigenous wisdom traditions. Today, we are grateful this knowledge is finally being remembered and reactivated through regional resiliency work happening across the globe.
A heartfelt thank you to the support of the Maurice Marciano Family Foundation, Nova Foundation and Nicholas Michaelson. Without your faith, generous contributions and advocacy for a more regenerative planet, this project never would have been possible.
Please stay posted for our second paper which will be published in the coming months.
